Underwater Baby Photography in Cornwall and Devon

My Cornish Waterbaby

I never thought I’d be lighting up my local swimming pools and taking underwater baby photographs down here in the West country.

I have always been passionate about the water, whether on top, next to or under. I have been fortunate enough to visit many exotic places on various surfing and diving trips. When the surf was flat I would don the mask and snorkel. I was fascinated by how close you could interact with life under the sea. I was, and still am amazed at the colours of a living fish compared to ones freshly off a line. Being a keen photographer from an early age, I have been through a number of underwater compacts, all with poor results, compared to what I was used to above water. It was not until my first full frame DSLR and a waterproof plastic bag (Ewa Marine) that I began to get images closer to the quality I was used to on land. From then, I was hooked.

From surfing, to scuba diving, to underwater photography, the next step for me was free diving – allowing me to get closer still to life underwater. With my training, I learnt about safe breath-holding. After discovering I was to become a dad, I started Googling about babies’ natural dive reflex. I was fascinated by the innate ability we are all born with to hold our breath when submerged.

Our waterbaby’s first dip!

Our beautiful daughter Isabella was born 2 and a half months prematurely and after 7 weeks in hospital, we were able to finally take her home. The next day, we took her swimming. We needed a lot of confidence to submerge her the first time, despite my research, especially as she wasn’t even supposed to be out of mum’s tum yet! However, being behind the camera, it was incredible to watch and record her very first time underwater.

It was from this first incredible experience with Isabella that the idea of underwater baby photography in Cornwall and Devon began to take shape and we began to recruit some of our close friends with little ones to have a go too. Babies are naturally photogenic underwater and the end result has always delighted their parents. Each photo shoot is individual, but they are all great fun for me, the parents and of course their babies too. Take a look at some of our favorite images from our recent underwater baby sessions.
